The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday promised to do everything within his
powers to professionalize the activities of the electoral body.
Disclosing
that he had seen where elections were held in other countries with the
identities of the chief electoral officers of such countries not being
known, the INEC Chairman said that Nigeria must start moving in that
direction.
Yakubu,
who spoke when he received the British High Commissioner to Nigeria,
Mr. Paul Arkwright, stressed that his first priority at the commission
“is to bring professionalism into election administration in the country
and as well instutionalise ICT-based solutions.”
“The
success of the last general elections and the recent inconclusive
governorship election in Kogi State was made largely possible with the
deployment of ICT,” he stated.
The INEC Chairman pledged to
improve engagement with major stakeholders for maximum participation,
with emphasis on women, youths, the disadvantaged, internally-displaced
persons and other vulnerable groups.
While calling for more
technical assistance from the UK government, he promised to ensure that
the commission consolidates on the modest successes that were recorded
in the last general elections.
On his part, the British envoy
expressed the readiness of his home government to partner with INEC in
order to deepen Nigeria’s democracy, and would want a comprehensive
brief from the commission stating major areas of necessary assistance.
