The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has directed the Nigerian Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) to partner with the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) to ensure effective surveillance at ward levels, and early disease detection and response.

He gave the directive while flagging off the training workshop on laboratory diagnosis of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and other Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF) organized by the centre in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

He said doing so will minimize response time to health emergency and also enhance quality of service.

The minister said the main focus of this administration in the health sector is primary health care strengthening and bringing healthcare service to most citizens at an affordable cost.

"To attain this, I expect that all sectors must key in to ensure the quality of services delivered at these centres, and the role of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control in this is obvious," he said.

Chief Representative, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Nigeria Office, Mr Hirotaka Nakamura said JICA decided to support NCDC laboratory officials across the country on the diagnosis technique of Ebola and other Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers because it is an essential component of surveillance as well as outbreak response.

National Coordinator, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, pledged that the staff of the centre will not let the country down in health emergency response.
