NERC Finally Increases Electricity Tariffs, Scraps Fixed Charges

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, on Monday finally released a new electricity tariff regime that has various rates of increase in energy charges for consumers across the country.
It also announced the removal of fixed power charges for all classes of electricity consumers, stressing that power users would henceforth only pay for what they consume.

Announcing the tariffs increase on Monday, NERC stated that from the next billing period, power distribution companies would no longer charge their customers monthly fixed charges that requires electricity consumers to pay an approved amount of money not minding whether electricity is consumed during the billing period.

NERC Suggests Measures to Prevent MDAs’ Electricity Debt

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said that it has made proposals to the National Assembly on how to prevent the accumulation of future electricity debts by government ministries, department and agencies (MDAs), Leadership reports.

Speaking during a workshop in Abuja, NERC chairman, Dr Sam Amadi explained that the strategy involved adopting the earmark strategy practised in the United States which stipulates that each MDA’s budget have clear earmarks for paying electricity bills with conditions that the money cannot be used for anything else.
