The rejection of load allocations from power generating plants by some electricity distribution companies is one of the factors preventing the country from fully benefitting from the 6,500 megawatts generation capacity of the existing power plants, The Punch reports.

Some power plant units were allegedly shut due to high frequency occasioned by the inability of the distribution companies to pick their load allocations.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has axed no fewer than 16 teachers at Elo High School, Ayetoro Ekiti, for allegedly using their pupils as labourers on their farms during school hours.

Fayose gave the directive in Ado Ekiti while receiving the report of a team led by the Deputy Governor, Dr Kolapo Olusola, that went to the school for a preliminary investigation.

African telecommunication giant, MTN has offered to pay 300 billion naira ($1.5 billion) to settle a record fine levelled against it by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for failing to disconnect unregistered subscribers.

A letter from the company’s lawyer released on Thursday hopes to trim the $3.9 billion slammed on the company in October to $1.5 billion.

The Chairmann House of Representatives Committee on Telecommunications, Hon. Sajeed Fijabi, on Wednesday insisted that MTN Nigeria should be made to pay the N1.04 trillion fine in full instead of reducing it to N780bn.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, had in October 2015 slammed an initial fine of N1.04 trillion on the telecom company for failing to disconnect 5.2 million unregistered subscribers on its network but was later reduced to N780 billion and gave the network provider till December 31, 2015 to pay up after the company had pleaded for leniency.


 
 
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the implementation of the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audits of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to strengthen control over government finances.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, said this on Wednesday, in Abuja, while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The death toll from the collapse of a five-story building in the Nigerian state of Lagos has reached 30, officials say.

The Lagos state government said on Wednesday that more bodies have been pulled out from under the rubble in the city of Lekki.

A Nigerian of Yoruba descent, Obasanjo was a career soldier before serving twice as his nation's head of state, as a military ruler from 13 February 1976 to 1 October 1979 and as a democratically elected president from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. From July 2004 to January 2006, Obasanjo also served as Chairperson of the African Union.
 

For allegedly raping a sick 15-year old girl in Alisimie, a rural community near Agbor, Delta State, the police have arrested a 70-year old man, Paul Ogwe, and his accomplices in the crime, Ability Ogwu, 65, and Kenneth Okoro, 58.

The crime became public knowledge when a relation of the victim, Patricia Oroyelu, caught the trio having carnal knowledge of the minor, taking advantage of her health condition.

MTN Group has reported a 0.1 percent increase in revenue to ZAR 147.1 billion in 2015 from ZAR 146.9 billion in 2014. 
 
Revenue remained flat largely because of a decline in voice revenue in Nigeria and a reduction in handset revenue in South Africa after industrial action in the first half of the year that led to lower device sales. 
 


South Africa’s MTN Group has set aside around $600 million to cover the potential settlement of a fine in Nigeria, the firm said on Thursday, as it posted a more than 50 percent drop in annual profit.

MTN is in talks with Nigerian authorities to reduce a $3.9 billion fine imposed last year for failing to cut off unregistered SIM card users, Reuters reported.
