The American University of Nigeria (AUN) with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) on Monday launched a literacy programme tagged “Year of Literacy: Technology Enhanced Learning for All (TELA)”.

A statement by the executive director in charge of Communication and Public Relations, Daniel Okereke, said the project was formally launched in Yola by the university​’s​ founder, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Adamawa State governor​, ​Mohammed Umaru Jibrilla.

Violence in northeast Nigeria and neighboring countries targeted by Boko Haram has forced more than one million children out of school, leaving them prey to abuse, abduction and recruitment by armed groups, the United Nations said on Tuesday.
More than 2,000 schools in Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger remain closed due to the conflict and hundreds have been looted, damaged or destroyed, said the U.N. children's agency UNICEF.

While hundreds of schools in northeast Nigeria have reopened in recent months, insecurity and fear of violence are preventing many teachers from resuming classes and discouraging parents from sending their children back to school, according to UNICEF.

A 37-year-old woman, Mrs Udoka David, on Monday urged an Alimosho Customary Court, Iyana-paja, in Lagos State, to dissolve her 10-year-old marriage as her husband has abandoned the matrimonial home. The petitioner told the court on Monday that her husband, Moses David, with whom she had four children in their 10-year-old marriage, packed out of their house to an unknown destination.

“I do not know what is wrong with my husband; he rejected me and the children by packing out of the house, saying that he was done with me and the children “When our church and family members tried to settle the matter, he said it was over his dead body that he will never accept me or the children,” she said.

She described her husband as an irresponsible husband and father,

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Saturday said that he was passionate about the future of children in the state.

Ambode spoke at the 2015 Children End of the Year Party organised by his wife, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

The governor, who noted that the party was the first he would be holding in office, said that the children were the future of the state.

“We are very passionate about what happens to children in Lagos. Children are our tomorrow.

“Next year’s party will be bigger than this. We will ensure provision of sporting and recreational facilities in all the nooks and crannies of Lagos State because these children are the future of Lagos State,” he said.
