As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark this year's World Sleep Day with the theme "Good Sleep is a reachable dream", experts have called for the enabling of good sleep awareness in the country towards promoting better leadership qualities.

Noting that good leaders sleep well, the experts argued that the average person spends approximately one third of his or her life in bed, sleeping.

In acknowledgment of his government's efforts to keep Nigeria polio-free, Rotary (http://www.Rotary.org) Wednesday presented President Muhammadu Buhari with its Polio Eradication Champion Award.

Last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) removed Nigeria from its list of polio-endemic countries after the country went one year without reporting a case of the disease.

Stakeholders in the health sector, especially on maternal and child health, have urged the Federal Government to make the health of mothers and children a priority, as well as declare a national emergency on the high maternal and neonatal deaths in the country.

Lagos State Government on Monday identified measles as the 'strange' disease that has killed over 20 children in Eti-Osa area of the state.

The state commissioner for health, Dr. Jide Idris, who disclosed this to journalists added that water samples also confirmed traces of bacterial infection as a result of poor environmental issues in the slum community.

Mrs Blessing Ameh, Health Educator, Kogi State Ministry of Health, said on Saturday that the state was free of polio for upward of six years without new cases.

Ameh said this in an interview in Lokoja, attributing the success story to routine polio immunisation exercises.

The Chief Medical Director of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Wale Oke, on Friday said that the state government was installing a helicopter evacuation system in the hospital.

Mr. Oke said at the hospital during a test-run of an emergency helicopter that the aim was to move patients from different locations when required.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has distributed 500,000 units of condom and conducted free HIV tests across different locations of Abuja to mark the International Condom Day (ICD) and Valentine's Day, the Abuja coordinator of the group, Kema Onu, has said.

The event tagged "Wrap Your Love: Play Safe, Stay Safe" involves distribution of condom accompanied by free instant HIV tests and AIDS awareness activities.

HIV resistance to the antiretroviral drug tenofovir (Viread) is increasingly common, a new study finds.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State says the Kidney Care Centre (KCC) in Ondo town has performed 2,571 sessions of dialysis since March 2014.

Mimiko said this on Wednesday in Akure while declaring open a two-day meeting of the State Council on Health, with the theme “Post MDGs: Sustaining Health Gains”.

He said that the centre charges N15,000 per dialysis session which, according to him, is not only the cheapest in Nigeria but half what is charged elsewhere across the country.


The governor said that KCC had established outreach centres in parts of the state to enlighten people on how to prevent kidney diseases.

President Muhammadu Buhari on December 22 last year presented the 2016 proposed budget estimate of N6.08 trillion to a joint session of the National Assembly. Out of the estimate, N257.3bn was proposed for the Ministry of Health.

This represents 4.23% of the budget, lower than that of 2015 (5.78%). Although the capital expenditure budget is 13.86% which is more than 8.73% of the 2015 budget, the health budget's value for this year also ranks the 5th largest allocation.

Following the reported case of a Lassa fever patient at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), Lagos State branch, for two consecutive days last weekend, moved from one market place to another in Lagos, pursuing rodents, to curb the spread of the ailment. Lassa fever is believed to be caused by rats and similar rodents. Chairman of EHOAN in Lagos State, Mr. Samuel Akingbehin, said the association decided to embark on the 'de-rat' exercise, "in order to reduce the number of the killer rodents in the market places."

AT least, two persons were feared dead in Aba, the commercial capital of Abia State on Monday following a protest by members of Indigenous People of Biafra.

The pro-Biafra supporters had defied several warnings by the state government and security agencies against protesting the continued detention of the Director of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

It was gathered that the group marched through major roads in the city, chanting solidarity songs in support of their detained leader.

But the protest, it was learnt turned violent when members of the group attempted blocking the Aba-Enugu highway and were dispatched by a team of the military and police.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has said that the Federal Government will strengthen Lassa fever alert system for effective monitoring of the disease in the country.

The Minister made this known yesterday, in Minna, Niger State during a courtesy call on the Governor Abubakar Bello.

Adewole noted that it was failure of the notification system that made it impossible for the ministry to respond promptly to the situation in Niger State, reiterating that the federal government's mission and mandate in the health sector was to keep every Nigerian safe.

Abuja — The Veterinary Council of Nigeria, VCN, has urged poultry farm owners to put in place preventive measures to stop any form of penetration of the multi-mammate rat (Mastomys natalensis) , carrier of the deadly Lassa fever virus into their farms.

Registrar, VCN, Dr. Markus Avong, said poultry farm owners should put in place rat-proofs to curb the movement of the rats.

Avong said: "The primary host of the Lassa virus is the multi-mammate rat, and has no clinical manifestation but transfers the virus to humans who are the next and final hosts.

"The owners of poultry farms should be extremely careful with their farms by putting measures that will prevent the rats from gaining entrance and access to their poultry feeds.

Kaduna — A media development organisation called Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) is collaborating with Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) to train journalists on reporting Zoonosis. Speaking during an advocacy visit to the leadership of Kaduna State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Programme Officer of AMDF, Sekyen Dadik explained that such training has become necessary in view of the threat posed by diseases transmitted from animals to humans such as Lassa fever and Ebola among others.

She implored journalists to do more of investigative reporting and data journalism, which according to her seeks to bring to light the beauty of every story.
